CERTIFICATE COURSE IN PHYTOCHEMISTRY

Number of contact hours : Lecture: 15 hrs & Practical 15 hrs

Aim of the course: To create awareness on the medicinal plant rich in phytoconstituents

Course Outcome:

·         To understand about different medicinal plants in the locality

·         To apply the knowledge regarding medicinal properties of plants

·         To give an insight into the phytocompounds present in medicinal plants

MODULE 1 (3 hrs)- Introduction to Pharmacognosy: a) Definition, history, scope and development of Pharmacognosy b) Classification of drugs on Natural origin - Organized drugs, unorganized drugs (dried latex, dried juices, dried extracts, gums and mucilage, oleoresins and oleo- gum -resins).

MODULE II (2hrs) - Pharmaceutical Botany: Morphology of different medicinal plants.

MODULE III (2hrs)- Quality control of Drugs of Natural Origin: Adulteration of drugs of natural origin.-Evaluation by organoleptic, microscopic, physical, chemical and biological methods and properties.-Quantitative microscopy of crude drugs including, leaf-constants, camera lucida and diagrams of microscopic objects to scale with camera lucida.

MODULE IV- (2 hrs)-Cultivation and Collection medicinal of natural-origin:
Cultivation and Collection of drugs of natural origin. Factors influencing cultivation of medicinal plants (Selected plants).

MODULE V- (3 hrs)-Primary metabolites and Secondary metabolites: General introduction, detailed study with respect to chemical structure, sources, preparation, evaluation, preservation, storage, therapeutic uses and commercial utility as Pharmaceutical Aids and/or Medicines.

Module VI- (3 hrs)-Pharmaceutical plants-An overview of selected medicinal plants: Morphology, family, vernacular, botanical name, useful part, uses active principles and phytotherapeutics. · Whole plant (Phyllanthus amarus, Bacopa monnieri, Scoparia dulcis) · Root ( Asparagus racemosus, Rauwolfia serpentina) · Leaf ( Aloe vera, Azadirachta indica) · Bulb( Allium cepa, Allim sativum) · Rhizome( Zingiber officinale, Curcuma longa) · Fruit ( Solanum nigrum, Solanum xanthocarpum, Phyllanthus emblica) · Seed(Trigonella foenum graceum. Cuminum cyminum)

 

Practical - 15 hrs

·         Perform Organoleptic Evaluation of Drug

·         Preliminary phytochemical testing of both primary and Secondary metabolites in Plants
